The metal tip heats up to melt the PLA filament, like a small glue gun. That's why the kit includes finger protectors and we recommend it from 6 years old, always with an adult nearby: the first few times, the adult shows where not to touch. PLA is a plant-based plastic, the same one 3D printers use.
